Elementary galvanometer: Coil on spring in magnetic field. This elementary galvanometer has a wire coil suspended on flexible springs between the poles of a permanent horseshoe magnet. When the key switch is pressed, a current flows through the coil, creating a magnetic field opposing the horseshoe magnet field. The coil swings, as indicated by the pointer arrow.
