This demo is a representation of how the center of mass of an object is not necessarily the point at which mass is equal on both sides. A baseball bat has been cut in two along its center of mass along the long side and joined together with a metal post stuck in between the two parts.
A professor can balance the bat along the center of mass (two fingers works well) and then pull the baseball bat apart and put both parts on a scale.
